What is Shaken Baby Syndrome

What is SBS?

Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) is a form of inflicted head trauma that results from extreme rotational cranial acceleration-deceleration induced by violent shaking. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that “The act of shaking leading to shaken baby syndrome is so violent that the individuals observing it would recognize it as dangerous and likely to kill the child. Shaken baby syndrome injuries are the result of violent trauma.”

What is AHT?

In 2009, the American Academy or Pediatrics Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect released a Policy Statement clarifying that the term Abusive Head Trauma (AHT) is a more appropriate term to use because it is inclusive of all mechanisms of injury (shaking, slamming, etc.) whereas SBS only includes shaking.
